Proverbs – On Education, Prov 4:1-9
Written by John Tsang

The beauty of Proverbs is that it speaks to ALL areas of our lives; money, friendship, work, wine, sex, pride, spiritual life, etc. Proverbs does not separate what is secular vs. spiritual but rather, it teaches us that all areas of our lives need wisdom from God.

“There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, Mine!” (Abraham Kuyper)

This past Sunday, Thomas helped us to see how our discipleship, learning, and education can be done with wisdom from Proverbs. Today, we face a crisis of character, ethics, and purpose. Here is how Proverbs offer us wisdom in the area of education.

Proverbs - On the Spiritual Life, Prov 2:1-22, 30:1-9

1. What makes Proverbs unique and different from other wisdom traditions?

We are all familiar with wisdom from other traditions. Almost every culture that I am aware of has some sort of collection of proverbial sayings:

The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.”

You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink.”

So what makes Proverbs in the Bible different and unique?

For the Lord grants wisdom!

From his mouth come knowledge and understanding. (Prov 2:6)

For wisdom will enter your heart,

And knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. (Prov 2:10)

Proverbs is unique in that it is wisdom that comes through a relationship with a kind, loving, and wise God who revealed himself to us as Father. As well, not only is Proverbs good for insight, relationships, and a good life; it is pleasant to our souls. It nourishes our spiritual life and it satisfies the longings of our hearts. This is what makes Proverbs surpass other wisdom traditions (I Kings 4:30).

Proverbs - On Food, Drink, and Eating Prov 9:1-6, 13-18; 23:19-21, 29-35

From Genesis to Revelation, we see that the theme of food, drink, and eating runs through all of Scripture. From the very act that brought sin into humanity, to the rich meaning of the Passover meal, to the criticism of Jesus by the Pharisees, to the institution of the Lord’s Supper, and to the controversies in the early church, food, drink, and eating has deep spiritual significance.

Proverbs offer us some wisdom in this very practical area of our lives:

1. The company with whom you eat with.

Better a dry crust with peace and quiet

Than a house full of feasting, with strife (Prov 17:1)

This Proverb is found in a collection that speaks to the family; the word ‘house’ also implies the family unit. Today, there are many things that compete with a family in the simple ritual of eating together. Individualism has found its way to the dinner table. Wisdom tells us that it is important to guard one’s family meal times. Secondly, we can extend this kind of table friendship to others in the spirit of hospitality. The Latin word companion is made of com (with) + panis (bread). A companion is someone with whom you share bread with.
